Home & Neighborhood Safety
• Define a defensible space around your home. A minimum of 30 feet of non-combustible area around your house is recommended. • Cut grass and weeds regularly. It is best to mow before noon to avoid causing a grass fire during the mowing process. • Never refuel a garden tractor or lawn mower while the motor is running. Shut off the engine and allow it to cool down first. • Keep your roof clear of pine needles, leaves and debris. Remove dead limbs and branches within ten feet of your chimney and deck. • Backyard barbecuing can be dangerous. Never try to rekindle a slow fire with gasoline or a liquid sold as an aid for starting a charcoal fire. • Never dispose of used charcoal briquettes on the ground, particularly in flower beds, where they can become a source of ignition for bark dust or similar mulch. Leave them in the barbecue until they are completely cool (up to a week) and then put them in a metal container for disposal. • To start a propane gas grill, always light the match before you turn on the gas. • Never store flammable liquids, such as lawn mower fuel, Coleman fuel, charcoal lighter fluid, etc. in glass or breakable containers. If plastic containers are used, make sure they are approved for the storage of flammable liquids. Otherwise, use metal flammable liquid containers, such as safety cans. These containers should be stored away from the house, preferably in a detached metal storage shed. • Relocate wood and piles of leftover building materials at least 30 feet away from your home and other buildings. Then, clear away flammable vegetation within 10 feet of the wood/debris piles as an additional safeguard. • Reduce flammable vegetation, trees and brush around your home. Use fire-resistive landscaping that does not contain volatile oils, resins, gums or terpenes. • Your house address and street name should be visible from all directions of travel for at least 150 feet. Letters and numerals should be at least four inches tall on a contrasting color background.
