POLICE CADETS

Officer and Cadet

The goal of the Vacaville Police Department's Cadet program is to train young men and women on the various aspects of police work in order to prepare them for a career in law enforcement.

Cadets assist with locating missing persons, DUI checkpoints, traffic control and much more.

Cadets attend meetings twice a month and receive other law enforcement-related training at least once every other month. They learn: Radio codes; First Aid & CPR;  laws and codes; how to do building searches; felony car stops; officer safety; defensive tactics; booking evidence; and most importantly they are exposed the infamous “paperwork” that police officers have to do.

Vacaville cadets are volunteers. Candidate must be at least 14 years old, show an active interest in the Police Cadet Program, maintain a minimum 2.0 grade point average, and must be able to pass a written exam, oral interview, and background investigation. Once accepted, Cadets may remain in the program until they are 21.  Application are available at both high schools. Applications must be filed out, signed, and returned to the Police Department or the Youth Service Offices at Will C. Wood or Vacaville High Schools.

STUDENT INTERNS

The primary goal of the Police Intern Program is to further prepare and develop qualified college students to enter the field of law enforcement -- preferably with the Vacaville Police Department -- while espousing their successful completion of a college education. The Police Internship Program is a civilian/part-time program designed specifically for actively-enrolled college students interested in a career in law enforcement. Interns work with experienced police officers, community service officers, and other civilian employees. The intern will work throughout the Department usually rotating positions every six months. The normal weekly schedule does not exceed 20 hours. Interns must maintain a satisfactory academic standing (2.00 GPA or better) in an acceptable college, and be enrolled in at least 12 semester/quarter units during the school calendar year. Participation in the Police Internship Program is limited to a maximum of four years or the completion of their college education.

Our counselors also provide family counseling, post-trauma counseling at crime scenes, forensic support, and functional supervision for Family Support Workers and interns. Interns can earn B.B.S.E hours. Supervision by a licensed MFT and LCSW is provided.

Counseling services are provided by college interns earning either a Bachelor or Master’s Degree in a counseling-based program in the university system. The Vacaville Police Department has a contractual agreement to provide intern supervision.
